A New z/OS “Application Modernization” Approach

Mainframe emulation—running workloads on something other than a big-iron IBM system—has a long history: XT/370, AT/370, P/390, Multiprise, Flex-ES, Platform Solutions, Inc. (PSI), Hercules, zPDT/RPDT … even z/VM and its predecessors are arguably a form of emulation, since they allow doing things that real hardware cannot. IBM internally has Vicom—the Virtual Computer, a highly modified version of VM that enables testing future and theoretical hardware features. And in days of yore, plugcompatibles were available from Amdahl, Hitachi, Formation, NCR, NAS and more.
